Annúminas was once the capital city of the Kingdom of Arnor located along the shores of Lake Evendim. The city was also the home of the chief palantir of the North.
For reasons unknown a large decline in population had caused the city to become deserted. Later, the kings of Arnor had the capital moved to Fornost Erain.
At the time of the War of the Ring at the end of the Third Age, Annúminas had lain in ruins for more than 2,000 years. There are hints in Tolkien's writings, however, that King Elessar, formerly known as Aragorn, refounded the city and may even have made it his northern capital early in the Fourth Age.
